Eigenfunction of continuous-time LTI systems - clearly explained This video proves one of the most important results in Signals and Systems: the eigenfunctions of continuous-time LTI systems. The discussion begins by showing that a system's impulse response is the output produced when the input is a Dirac delta function, establishing the foundation for analyzing linear time-invariant systems. Using this definition, we derive the convolution theorem, proving that the output of any continuous-time LTI system is the convolution of the input signal with the system's impulse response. Finally, these results are used to prove the fundamental theorem that the complex exponential, x(t)=e^(st), is an eigenfunction of every continuous-time LTI system, with the corresponding eigenvalue given by H(s). This powerful result explains why complex exponentials are central to Fourier analysis, Laplace transforms, and linear system analysis, allowing differential equations to be replaced with simple multiplication in the transform domain.
